My Mother's Gift to Me

Mother's day is this comming Sunday May 8th.  The following poem is in honor of my mother and the women of my family.  Enjoy and God bless.

The Gift

Needle in, needle out.
            Knit one, purl two.
                        Double crochet, chain one,
                                    yarn over pull through.

Scissors, needles, pins,
fabric, solid or prints large and bold.
A pair of mint green mittens
            with green buttons.
The kaleidoscope granny square sweater,
that mice ate in the attic.
The quilt from dresses my mom and sisters wore
            that covers my bed.

Grandma crocheted by lamplight.
            Stacks of quilt patches laid
                        on her treadle sewing machine.
Mom knits watching television.
            Embroidered quilt squares lay
                        by her chair.
I steal minutes to crochet and knit.
I wait to finish two quilt tops,
                        Star of David from grandma,
Kittens embroidered on squares from mom.

Grandma started the gift.
Mom carried it through to me.
I pass it on,
            Paula asks, Show me how?
                        We sit down.

Needle in, needle out.
            Knit one, purl two.
                        Double Crochet, chain one,
                                    Yarn over pull through.
