Women's History Month - Abraham Lincoln's mother(s)

Nancy Hanks married Thomas Lincoln in 1806.  And in 1809 their 2nd child Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky.  Would Nancy Hanks have known her son would be president one day?  As Thomas Lincoln moved his family from one farm to another finally ending up in Indiana living in a 3 walled shelter during the winter of 1816, could she have imagined Abraham as president?  Struggling in the early Indiana wilderness Thomas and young Abraham (now 8) built a cabin in 1817.  On October 5, 1818 Nancy Hanks Lincoln died from milk poisoning.

Did Nancy have dreams of Abraham becoming president or growing up to be a good boy or just growing up?  We'll never know.  What is known is that young Abraham was lucky because in 1819 his father married the widow Sarah Bush Johnston, who treated Abraham and his older sister Sarah as she treated her own 3 children.  Abraham referred to her as his Angel Mother.

We recognize the women in history who were mothers, wives and daughters who without knowing have left an impression marking our lives.

  1. What rich history is in this post. Maybe those difficult circumstances of Lincoln's early life gave him the strength and character for which he is still remembered today ...
