Stagecoach Etiquette in The 1800's

Traveling on a stagecoach in the 1800's would be equivalent to taking today's bus.  But there were rules of etiquette then which we over look today.

1. Riders should not smoke when a lady is present.
2. If you have anything to drink, offer the other passengers a drink too.
3. If you get stuck in the mud and the driver asks you to get out and help push, be obliging.
4. Don't lean or lop over neighbors when sleeping.
5. Don't snore loudly.
6. If you chew tobacco, spit on the leeward side.
7. Gentlemen do not use offensive language in the presence of ladies or children.
8. Don't hog the buffalo robes that are provided for cold weather.
9. Don't ask how far it is to the next station until you get there.
10. Don't growl at the food at the stations.  Stage companies provide the best they can.

Remember these rules of etiquette the next time you travel by stage and everyone will be happier.  As for me, I think I'll take the bus.
